WET WEEK COULD BRING FLASH FLOODS

Residents on the NSW North Coast are bracing for a week of heavy rain and thunderstorms which could cause flash flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for heavy rain for the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast Forecast Districts, warning flash flooding could affect Grafton, Maclean, Coutts Crossing, Nymboida, Ulmarra and Glenreagh.

NBN’s Weatherman Gavin Morris says a significant rain event is on the way with storms already flaring up.

“Along the New South Wales North Coast there is a real potential for flooding as we move through this week due to some very consitent rain. There’ll be heavy falls, we’ll see some thunderstorms which have already flared up right across the North West this afternoon.”

“There is a huge amount of moisture, across the weekend we had an upper level disturbance that pumped a huge amount of moisture in across the broadcast area and we’ve had very consistent, easterly winds across some very warm ocean temperatures. About a week or so ago we looked at how the La Nina was breaking down and all of the warm water that was sitting in the Coral Sea is getting funnelled down in the East Australia Current.

“Now a huge amount of warm water is sitting just off the coast and we have all the ingredients coming together for this flooding event across the coast. The moist onshore winds are going to continue into Tuesday, with heavy rain pretty much stretching from the Tweed all the way to Gosford. On Wednesday Port Macquarie, Coffs and Newcastle will be under fire.”

The State Emergency Service has advised that people should
* Keep clear of storm drains and creeks
* Don’t walk, ride a bike or drive through flood water
* Unplug computers and appliances
* Stay indoors away from windows
