POWER BILLS TO RISE MORE THAN $380 A YEAR

The states pricing regulator has warned household electricity bills are set to rise more than $380 a year because of rising network costs and the carbon tax.

The Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal today handed down its draft report, recommending an average
price rise of 16 per cent across the state.

The price will vary across the three regulated electricity retailers with EnergyAustralia customers facing the biggest increase of about $338 extra annually or 19.2 per cent.

Integral Energy customers will fare better with an increase of $3.51 per week or $182 a year on their household bill.

Customers of Country Energy will be charged an extra $7.32 a week or $381 a year.

The draft report also suggested several recommendations to improve the affordibility of electricity including National Electricity Rules green schemes and subsidies, and for customers to shop around for the best deal.

IPART will set down the final decision on pricing in mid-June, in time for a price change on July 1.
