GOLD COAST UNITED “FREEDOM OF SPEECH” ROW CONTINUES

Gold Coast United is refusing to remove unsanctioned “Freedom of Speech” stripes on the players’ jerseys and signage, claiming it was done to highlight the plight of refugees.

The club was found to be in breach of rules and Saturday’s game against Melbourne Victory was nearly cancelled after the club refused to change jerseys.

United CEO Clive Mensink says the words have nothing to do with billionaire owner Clive Palmer’s spat with FFA boss Ben Buckley.

Two players, Samuel Tesfagabr and Ambes Yosief – both from Eritrea – were granted refugee status by the Australian Government in 2010.
