FLOOD DANGER IN NSW NORTH WEST

Heavy rain in the past 24 hours is causing headaches for thousands of people in North Western New South Wales.

450 properties are affected in Moree with the Mehi River expected to exceed 7.5 metres, and with more rain predicted, it could reach 9.5 metres, by 9pm tonight.
The SES is urging residents within the nominated areas of the town prepare to evacuate in the next 12 to 24 hours.

The State Emergency Service is warning of minor to major flooding for the Peel and Namoi Rivers.

Around 145 millimetres of rain has fallen in the 42 hours to 3am Thursday morning, with more rain possible in the next 12 hours.

In Tamworth the Peel River is expected to exceed minor flood levels around 10am Thursday and with further rain forcast, reach 5 metres by 6pm.

This would cause flooding of the low lying carparks and sporting fields.

In Gunnedah the Namoi River is expected to peak at 7.7 metres at 7am Friday morning with moderate flooding.

At 7.32 metres water will be over the Gunnedah to Kelvin Road, which would be closed at Cohen’s Bridge. The SES also says low lying areas of in the Kelvin, Bluevale, Wean and Orange Grove Road areas may also be affected.

At Narrabri, Narrabri Creek is expected to exceed 6.4 metres around 3pm Thursday, leading to minor flooding. At 5.9 metres the lower end of the Big Sky Caravan Park would become flooded.

The Namoi River at Wee Waa is expected to exceed 6.4 metres around 3pm on Thursday and peak just below 7 metres around 2pm on Friday. This would lead to major flooding and isolate the town.
