CRITICAL INVESTIGATION TEAM FOR POLICE SHOOTING

An investigation is underway after a police officer was allegedly hit by a car near Newcastle last night.
About 10pm, two patrol units stopped a vehicle on Thomas Street, Wallsend, and tried to arrest the driver for outstanding warrants relating to driving and drug offences.

Police say the man drove his Toyota sedan at a senior constable, hitting the officer, who rolled up onto the bonnet but was not seriously injured.

The driver then allegedly steered towards another officer, who drew his firearm. The officer fired a shot at the vehicle, which it is believed has grazed the driver’s thigh.

The car drove south onto the F3 and police and was pursued south.

The car was stopped on Wyong Road by police from Tuggerah Lakes and the driver, aged in his thirties, was arrested.
Police also arrested a female passenger.

A Critical Incident Investigation Team from Lake Macquarie Local Area Command has been formed to investigate the incident.
