AUTHORITIES ON LOOKOUT FOR WEED WORSE THAN LANTANA

Far North Coast residents are being asked to be on the lookout for a weed which authorities say is worse than Lantana.

The South American Siam Weed is currently only found in Far North Queensland, but local authorities are worried about a possible spread south.

The plant can grow up to 20 millimetres a day, and has a devastating effect on the local environment.

“Siam Weed is the worst weed in the world, it has affected large areas of South East Asia, it kills cattle, it’s toxic to humans, toxic to fish”.

While there are no known cases of Siam Weed in northern New South Wales, authorities say it could already be growing in the region.

Residents are asked to report any possible sightings to Far North Coast weeds.
