Bangalow is today celebrating news that the RTA will not go ahead with its plans for an interchange.
Locals say if it had have been approved, it would have created excessive pollution, noise and lighting problems.
“Yesterday we were just jumping up and down and the news is slowly getting out into the community. People can’t believe after 3 years of battling we’ve finally got a sensible down to earth solution.”
The interchange was intended as an alternative route for when the St Helena Tunnel is closed.
“I think ultimately it won’t be bad for the RTA either because what it means is there’s a big interchange there that might have cost somewhere between 5 and 10 million that won’t be needed.”
The RTA will now work with the community to find an alternative.
Congratulations are eminently due to the group comprising Tony Hart, Ian Hay and Aileen Cole for their well-planned, diligent persistence over many years – against formidable odds. Congratulations too to those other members of the community who, in spite of re-buffs and stonewalling, have harried and hassled the RTA and pollies to take notice of community concerns. It all demonstrates that you need to have guts and determination to get your voice heard and ideas recognised in today’s democracy.
Amendment to my earlier comment! I should have listed the pro-active group responsible for this major victory as Aileen Cole then Tony Hart and Ian Hay in recognition of the number of years that Aileen has been battling the RTA’s transgressions.
Where credit is due, Colin and Carol Cook are also to be thanked for their very generous help and support in lobbying the RTA. They are to be thanked for contributing so much time and hard work, design work and drawings. Colin and Carol both deeply care for the future of Bangalow, for making it a better place and for the health and well being of our community as a whole.
