HMRI UNLOCKING MYSTERY OF POSTNATAL DEPRESSION

Postnatal depression affects almost 15 per cent of new mums in Australia.

A new study, being conducted by the Hunter Medical Research Institute, aims to unlock some of the mystery of this debilitating condition.

They’re investigating the visual responses of mothers to their children by using a new tool to scan their eyes while looking at images.

Researchers are then able to identify what emotions mothers respond to and how that impacts on the way they see their baby.

It’s hoped the research will lead to better treatment programmes and even a test to identify parents most at risk of depression.
