MAJOR CHEM SPILL CAUSES CONCERN NEWCASTLE

The fire brigade’s hazardous materials units are on the scene of a major chemical spill at Newcastle’s Kooragang Island.
Workers using a jack hammer broke an amonia gas line near the Orica plant on Greenleaf Road.
400 workers were evacuated from neighbouring industries and the nearby Stockton hospital was notified of the incident.

Fire crews are still on the scene and it appears any risk of environmental contamination has been contained and the spill brought under control.
