BOIL OVER AS MOSQUE DECISION DEFERRED

A controversial proposal to build a mosque in the Newcastle suburb of Elermore Vale again created community concern last night when a regional planning panel deferred a decision to approve or refuse the plan.

Residents opposed to the plan argue that the $6.5 million development will create traffic congestion in the area.

The panel resolved to carry out further traffic studies but opponents angrily vented their frustrations at the delay.

Security staff and police were called to calm the packed meeting at City Hall.
