PLEA TO LET JAPANESE EXCHANGE STUDENTS STAY

Urgent measures are being taken to enable a group of Japanese exchange students from the devastated region of Kesennuma, to stay in Newcastle.

The 45 high school pupils are due to fly back to their homeland tomorrow night, even though 20 of them have been unable to contact family members.

Newcastle’s Japanese community is now lobbying the city’s federal MP, Sharon Grierson, as well as the Japanese Consulate-General, for permission to extend the teenagers’ stay in Australia for at least the next few weeks.
