A-LEAGUE COMING TO PORT ON SUPER SUNDAY

A turf war in Newcastle has resulted in Port Macquarie this weekend hosting top flight football.

The Newcastle Jets will play Melbourne Heart at the Port Macquarie Regional stadium on Sunday afternoon, after the Jets’ pitch was deemed unsafe to play on.

A stadium motorcross event 11 days ago chewed up part of the EnergyAustralia Stadium playing surface, resulting in a bitter war of words between the Newcastle Knights, who sanctioned the motorcross event, the Jets and the state government.

The state government wants to wrest control of the stadium from the Knights.

But Newcastle’s loss is Port Macquarie’s gain. Jets officials say they want to start building the club’s fanbase in Northern New South Wales, starting on Sunday. The club says tickets wil be cheap and those under 15 will get in for free.

It’s a super Sunday for Port Macquarie which will also host the Port Macquarie half ironman triathlon.
