Staff at United Goninan’s Broadmeadow operation will be affected by nationwide layoffs.
42 jobs will go at the plant, mostly from engineering and support services.
The rail car builder has put the layoffs down to the global financial crisis, but says it remains committed to manufacturing in Newcastle.
Other plants affected by the job cuts are Taree, Townsville and Cairns.
