LONG AWAITED LANDFALL

An epic voyage up Australia’s east coast in a rowing boat was remembered at Lake Macquarie today.

95 years ago, two brothers who couldn’t afford the train fare, set out from Gippsland in Victoria in a five-metre boat, to row to Lake Macquarie and begin studies at Avondale college.

They covered 700 kilometres in 12 days, almost died, and finally sold their boat to pay the school fees.

Today their descendents looked on as a replica rowboat made a symbolic arrival to commemorate the journey.
