Emergency services were called to Henry Street, Jesmond around 9.30 last night, to reports of a house well alight.
Once the fire was out, fire fighters located the body of a woman, believed to be in her 50s, in the lounge room.
She is yet to be formally identified.
Relatives gathered at the house today as investigations into the fire continued.
