FUTURE OF FEED MILL IN DOUBT

The future of Tamworth’s George Weston Feedmill is under threat, with the company announcing a review of the operation.

The mill produces stock feed and currently employs 14 people, but the company says demand for the product has dropped and the site is aging.

It comes after the mill faced heavy fines last September, when animal fat was found leaking into stormwater pipes and the Peel River.

Weston divisional boss, Stuart Grainger, says it would require massive investment to bring the site up to scratch.

He says the review which is now underway will make a recommendation, which could range from shutting it down to spending the money.

The review will wrap up mid-October.
