E WASTE EARNS DOLLARS AND JOBS

In our continuing Together Today series we look at how local communities are trying to establish collection and reuse programs for e-waste, or old electronic items.

Nationally, 16-million such items go into landfill each year.

Newcastle City Council has joined a Hunter Resource Recovery program, which aims to divert 100,000 tonnes of e-waste from tips, in its first 12 months.

Already, several full-time jobs have been created, and tens of thousands of dollars worth of materials have been recovered.
For example, just one old computer monitor contains about two kilos of lead.

Hunter Resource Recovery and the Newcastle City Council encourage Newcastle residents to bring their old computers, printers, fax machines, microwave ovens, TVs, phones and portable electrical items to the Energy Australia Stadium carpark on Saturday the 29th August.
