CITY RENEWAL REPORT GOES PUBLIC

The highly anticipated Hunter Development Corporation’s , Newcastle City Centre Renewal Report, has been made public. It identifies a number of projects that the HDC claims will generate economic activity over the next 15 to 20 years.

Key points include the removal of the rail line from Newcastle station back to Wickham to create a transport interchange, retaining the rail corridor as open space for pedestrians and cyclists.

The report also recommends the relocation of Newcastle University’s campus into the city, along with a Justice Precinct at Civic. For more details click on the text to see full report.

  1. Why not take the train line underground for the last couple of stations. America took the rail from many downtown cities, and in some cases is trying to put it (or light rail) back.

    I waited at one of the Newcastle level crossings while a train:
    * pulled into the station well before the crossing
    * loaded passengers
    * then eventually proceeded over the crossing A FEW MINUTES LATER.

    Signals for the train could allow a longer car crossing time.

    Are people supposed to get off the train and walk or transfer to a bus or pushbike?

    Silly idea to cut the line. Costa or his ideas still reign with anti train and anti light rail sentiment.
