Seaweed stirred up by recent big seas has made an unwelcome arrival at Merewether Beach during the opening rounds of Surfest.
Clumps of kelp have been washing in this week, making it difficult for surfers to manoeuvre in some sections of the break.
A council beach cleaner was called in to clear the rotting weed this afternoon.
Merewether Baths will be cleaned tomorrow.
