KOOKABURRAS CLAIM RICHARDSON SHIELD

The Central North Kookaburras have returned home from the Country Rugby Union Championships, with an impressive piece of silverware.

The Kookaburras met the New England Lions in the Richardson Shield grand final and it was the Lions who dominated the first half of the game.

Two run-away tries handed the defending champions an early lead, before the Kookaburras found form and staged a remarkable comeback.

The cliffhanger game saw the Central North boys trailing by 5 with just minutes remaining, before fullback Luke White crossed to even the score.

A successful conversion handed the Kookaburras a 24 to 22 point victory.

Despite the loss, Lions players have dominated the 35-man Cockatoos squad announced last night.

New South Wales Rugby Union selectors have named seven New England players, more than any other zone.

Central North backs, Heath Riggs and Simon Newton were also given the nod, as was Kookaburras skipper, Ben Colley.

The Cockatoos will play the New South Wales Suburban team at the Sydney Football Stadium on the 11th of April.
