COUNCIL WALKOUT

A northwest council is in turmoil, after a majority of its elected representatives walked out of the monthly meeting.

Five Gwydir Shire councillors supported a no-confidence motion in the mayor, Robert Tremain.

Crs Peter Caskey, Angela Doering, Catherine Egan, Peter Pankhurst and Clem Gordon then left when the mayor refused to stand down.

The meeting was adjourned until the 16th of April.

The councillors cited a number of issues leading to the motion, including the mayor’s handling of community concerns about free camping on the Gywdir River bank in Bingara.
