TRUCK DRIVER ESCAPES DEATH

A truck driver narrowly escaped disaster this morning, when his rig carrying a load of barley crashed in Manilla.

He was travelling south along Manilla Street when his truck tipped over on a left-hand bend, before sliding down a hill and slamming into a tree.

An oncoming council truck was forced to swerve off the road to avoid a collision.

Sergeant Michael Moy says the driver of the truck with the grain was very lucky because if it had gone over fully on its roof he would have been crushed by the grain truck.

Tamworth Regional Council crews helped sweep up the grain, while traffic was diverted via Barraba Street.

The driver was taken to Manilla Hospital suffering minor injuries.
