Inverell police are searching for an arsonist responsible for lighting nine spot fires that threatened land near Ashford and Texas yesterday.
A derelict building was destroyed in one blaze and police say the incident could have had tragic results.
All nine fires were started within a 15-kilometre radius, and at one stage there were concerns a change in wind direction would see the blazes join up.
