FISH POOLS FOR ORARA RIVER

A fishway inserted in the Orara River has created access for fish species to more than 60 kilometres of upstream habitat which was previously blocked by a river crossing.

A series of rock pools have been created at Skewes Crossing which allows Australian Bass and the endangered Eastern Freshwater Cod to migrate upstream.

The fishway mimics natural stream conditions allowing fish to gradually swim over the barrier.

Two-thirds of coastal fish species undertake large-scale migrations associated with breeding and feeding.
