NRMA SLAMS NEWELL HIGHWAY

An audit of the Newell Highway has found the standard of the road is unacceptable.

The NRMA released a report on the inland highway between Brisbane and Melbourne today, focussing on so-called black spots.

The motoring group said only nine per cent, or 95 kilometres of the highway, had more than one lane in both directions, with trucks representing one in every two vehicles on the road between Narrabri and the Queensland border.

A crash-rate analysis also revealed that the section between Coonabarabran and Narrabri was the worst, with 20 crashes for every 100-million-vehicle kilometres travelled.
