COUNCILS GIVEN HELPING HAND BY FEDERAL GOVT

How would you go spending $300-million in less than a year ?

That’s the mission given to the nation’s local mayors by the Prime Minister today. He wants them to spend fast and spend big on swimming pools, libraries and community centres.

Mr Rudd hopes the spending spree will help to stop the country slipping into recession.

One of the largest slices of the $300-million Federal funding program will go to Lake Macquarie City Council, which will receive $2.1-million.

Newcastle has been offered $1.9-million to help tackle the city’s massive infrastructure backlog.

The amounts were calculated on population and growth projections, with Maitland receiving $1.1-million and Port Stephens $940,000.

The infrastructure program is a one-off, provided by the Federal Government in response to the economic downturn.
