Western Suburbs ended something of a premiership drought in the Newcastle Rugby League after a rain effected season decider against Cessnock.

The Goannas looked to have done enough to upset the minor premiers but Rosella’s winger John Reynolds scored all 12 of their points, including the match winning try just minutes from full-time to claim the proud club’s first premiership since 2004.

It may have robbed several Cessnock greats of a fairytale farewell but for West captain Dan Quinn and inspirational hooker Matt Thurston, the 12 – 10 win was their first senior football title.
