ABANDONED MINE A HEALTH HAZARD?

A health scare surrounds an abandoned asbestos mine near Barraba.

The Asbestos Diseases Foundation of Australia and the community are calling on the New South Wales Government to clean up the site.

The Woodsreef Mine closed more than 20 years ago, but it left behind an estimated 25-million tonnes of asbestos waste.

People living nearby say the waste is a health hazard because it is being wind blown, and is now also on a public road.
