There were tears and applause at Newcastle’s Catholic cathedral last night, as Bishop Michael Malone apologised to victims of sexual abuse at the hands of clergy.
Those who were abused say the apology will help the healing process, but the church acknowledges that stamping out paedophilia in its ranks will be difficult.
