JURY EXCUSED FROM ARSON CASE

The trial of a man charged with lighting dozens of spot fires in a Central Coast National Park two years ago, has begun without the jury.

41-year-old Murray Toomey of Wingham is accused of igniting up to 30 fires in the Mangrove Creek and Mooney Creek areas in October 2006.

In the Gosford District Court, the jury hearing the case was excused for two days, as the prosecution and defence wrangle over legal issues.

Witnesses in the case include several rural fire service volunteers.
