POPE’S PILOT

There’s a local connection to the Pope’s departure from Australia, one that has made a local mum very proud.

Qantas pilot and former Bulahdelah boy Ken Ireland was specially chosen as one of the crew for Benedict XVI’s charter flight to Rome.

The 57-year-old has been been with Qantas for nearly 40 years and was behind the controls today in the role of Deputy Chief Pilot.

Captain Ireland rang his mum Nancy in Bulahdelah and told her he was nervous about meeting the pontiff but wasn’t worried about flying him.
