CHAFFEY DAM PREPARES FOR FLOODS

Preliminary work on the safety upgrade of Chaffey Dam near Tamworth has begun.

State Water has started drilling for the proposed spillway which will help the flow of water in the event of a flood.

The $18-million project, which is separate from the capacity augmentation program, will upgrade the dam to comply with new safety standards.

Drilling will continue for four months, with construction due to begin in 2010.
