RYAN CALLINAN MAKING THE MOST OF HIS TIME IN RIO

With the women wrapped up in Rio, the wait is finally over for Merewether’s Ryan Callinan. A healthy swell is predicted for the closing stages of the men’s event, and the 23-year-old has been putting his free time to good use, taking in some landmarks, while also fine-tuning his aerial skills. Callinan will face local hope Caio Ibelli in round three.

BANTING INTO ROUND 3 OF RIO PRO

Port Macquarie’s Matt Banting is into the third round of the Rio Pro, producing his best performance of the season against American Kolohe Andino. Banting posted a two-wave total of 14.76, beating the world number four by just 0.1. “The first wave, that 7 and a half or whatever I got, I sort of surfed a little bit soft on the first turn and it was just such a good wave, I didn’t want to fall and kind of just put something on the board,” Banting said. The 21-year-old will now go up against Michel Bourez in his round three heat. (AUDIO IN PARTS)

CHRIS ZAFFIS WINS MENTAWAI PRO

Angourie’s Chris Zaffis has taken out the Mentawai Pro in Indonesia. The 18-year-old claimed victory over Indonesian surfing legend Dede Suryana, with a near-perfect score of 19.25. It’s Zaffis’ first event win in the qualifying series, and the biggest win of his career so far. (NO AUDIO)

CHRIS HEMSWORTH SPOTTED SURFING AT BYRON

Fresh off a surfing trip to Fiji, Chris Hemsworth has hit the swell back in Byron Bay in northern New South Wales. The Australian actor was spotted “carving it up” with several friends in the cold and windy conditions. His brother Liam was also there but didn’t get wet – instead perching himself on nearby rocks to take photos. (VISION ONLY)

SURFER DETAINS ALLEGED THIEF

Two members of the public joined forces with a surfer yesterday afternoon, to detain an alleged thief until police arrived. The boardrider chased down the 47 year old Byron man, after allegedly finding him stealing from his van at The Pass at Byron Bay. Police later charged the accused over the incident. He was refused bail in Tweed Heads Local Court today where his matter was adjourned.
