World champion surfer Tyler Wright won’t be feeling the pressure at Maui this week. She’s instead looking forward to honing her skills at the iconic break, having already secured her first world title. KENNEDY, MELLING, KNOCKED OUT IN ROUND 4

Stu Kennedy and Adam Melling’s future on surfing’s championship tour remains uncertain, after both bowed out of the Hawaiian Pro QS event in round three. Kennedy posted the lowest score of his heat, an 8.97 – less than half that of eventual winner Griffin Colapinto. Melling, meanwhile, went down to Brazillian Jason Andre by almost 6 points. Elsewhere, Kennedy and locals Soli Bailey and Kyuss King have made the final of the ‘Oakley’ battle clips competition. (AUDIO IN PARTS)

STU KENNEDY MISSES OUT ON QUARTERFINALS IN PORTUGAL

Le-Ba surfer Stu Kennedy has narrowly missed out on qualifying for the quarter finals of the Rip Curl Pro in Portugal, losing to Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz in Round five. Kennedy started off strong, taking the lead, but a  solid tube ride by Zietz at the 17 minute mark pushed the Hawiian into the lead. It was neck and neck for the remainder of the heat,  Kennedy, hoping to recover the lead with less than ten seconds on the clock. “Looking for a final wave, snaps it off the lip, controls the carve and one more blast on a small inside wave” But it wasn’t enough, Kennedy narrowly losing the heat with a final score of 8.43 to Zietz’s 8.80. KENNEDY CREDITS LENNOX WITH TRESTLES SUCCESS

Lennox Head surfer Stu Kennedy, has attributed his quarter-finals appearance at the Hurley Pro at Trestles, to the familiar conditions. “What is it about these perfect nuggets that you do so well in? Well, growing up at Lennox it’s always pretty much like this at home. All those years of surfing right-hand point breaks” Eliminated by wildcard Tanner Gudauskas yesterday – Kennedy’s now returning home for the birth of his baby girl. The father-to-be plans to skip the Billabong Pro QS event in Portugal, before rejoining the tour at the Quiksilver Pro France. (AUDIO IN PARTS)

KERR ENDS KENNEDY’S TEAHUPO’O CAMPAIGN

Stu Kennedy’s Billabong Pro campaign ended in round two, at the hands of fellow Aussie Josh Kerr. Each scored a 7 in tricky conditions at Teahupo’o. Kerr then coupled that with a 5.17 – trumping Kennedy’s next best wave, a four. His elimination leaves Adam Melling as the only Far North Coast local in round three. (VISION ONLY)

KENNEDY CRUISES INTO 3RD ROUND

It was a mixed day for Far North Coast surfers, competing in the men’s event at the US Open of Surfing. Lennox Head’s Stu Kennedy sailed through the second round, posting a heat total of 14. Byron Bay’s Soli Bailey, however, finished with the lowest score in his heat and was eliminated. Kennedy now meets Hawaii’s Sebastian Zietz in round 3. (VISION ONLY)

KENNEDY KNOCKED OUT OF FIJI PRO

File Image Michel Bourez has eliminated Stu Kennedy during round two of the Fiji Pro. A single 7-point wave from Bourez was all it took, with both surfers struggling to score above 5 points throughout the rest of the heat. Bourez eventually finished with a two-wave score of 11.5, compared to 8.83 from the Lennox Head local. Adam Melling is now the only Far North Coast surfer left in the competition. (VISION ONLY)

WILKINSON TO FACE KENNEDY AT MARGARET RIVER

The waiting period for the Margaret River Pro opens tomorrow, with Byron Bay resident and current tour leader Matt Wilkinson to face the in-form Stu Kennedy for the first time this season. Adam Melling will also contest the event in Western Australia – facing fellow Aussies Kai Otton and Julian Wilson in his heat. Meanwhile Tyler Wright will be looking to continue her impressive start to the season in the women’s draw. (VISION ONLY)
