Disappointment for Wanderers junior Harry Johnson-Holmes at rugby’s under-20 world championships, with Australia beaten by Scotland in the fifth place playoff. The sides were locked at 17-all when Scotland scored a controversial winner. “For me, that’s no try, he can’t hold his opposite number and he shouldn’t even be in contact with him.” But the try was awarded, handing Australia a 24-17 loss.

DOLPHINS THRASH RATZ IN TAREE

Wallamba had a massive win in the Lower Mid North Rugby Union competition, thrashing Gloucester by 90 points. Myall Coast cruised to victory over Old Bar, while Forster-Tuncurry were too strong for Manning River. The Dolphins laid down four tries on their way to a 38-point thrashing in Taree yesterday. They’re currently sitting second on the ladder, with five wins.

LOCAL PROP RECEIVES NATIONAL CALL-UP

Young Port Macquarie Pirates prop Dave Puchert has received a last minute call-up to the Australian Under 20s rugby training camp. The 19-year-old impressed Wallabies scrum coach Mario Ledesma, during the weekend’s Mid North Coast representative training session. Puchert will play in the Country Championships this Saturday, before joining the camp on Sunday. The Aussies take on Fiji and New Zealand in the Oceania Cup next week, in preparation for the World Cup in June.
