HUNTER ATHLETES BRING HOME WINS FROM 2015 SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Two athletes from the Hunter Academy of Sport are celebrating their achievements at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles last week. Jordan Brown and Keiran Corry, competed in team and individual events during the 9-day World Games. The pair received gold together for the 4x100M Freestyle Relay. Jordan won two bronze medals for 100M Breastroke and 200M breaststroke. Keiran won bronze for the 1500M Open Water swim.

GAV’S WEATHER: ONE OF THE WARMEST WEEKENDS OF THE WINTER ON THE WAY.

Over the past week a large pool of very warm air has built up over central Australia and it is headed our way. We’re in a very convenient cycle at the moment where the warm air shows up on the weekend ahead of the cold fronts that push through on Monday and Tuesdays. This next front could produce snow down to sea level for Tasmania on Sunday and there is a chance snow could fall on the Barringtons once again on Monday night. FINANCIAL COUNSELLING SERVICE RECEIVES CONFIRMED FUNDING FROM STATE GOVERNMENT FOR NEXT THREE YEARS

The Financial Counselling Hunter Valley Project’s future was unknown earlier this year, with fears the counselling service would close. Today, it was confirmed the service will receive another three years of State Government Funding. The service covers an area from Port Stephens to Quirindi in the North West. Each service across this area will be supported in the three years of funding. Member for Maitland, Jenny Aitchson welcomed the news, explaining it is a vital service to the community.

HUNTER VALLEY ENERGY COAL HEAVILY FINED OVER BLAST INCIDENT

Hunter Valley Energy Coal has been heavily fined over a blast incident at its Mount Arthur coal mine near Muswellbrook in February 2014. The company was penalised nearly $60,000 and also ordered to pay the NSW Environment Protection Authority’s costs of $30,000. The blast created potentially harmful fumes that travelled over Thomas Mitchell Drive Industrtrial Estate at Muswellbrook. EPA Manager for the Hunter Region, Adam Gilligan said the result was a positive one for the local community. “Incidents like this cause significant concern to the community, particularly for those who find themselves in the direct path of potentially harmful fumes. The EPA takes these matters very seriously and this result serves as a reminder to industry of the need to ensure proper procedures are in place to prevent incidents like this occurring in the future.

MAN CHARGED FOLLOWING ALLEGED PURSUIT AT ARMIDALE

A man will appear in court following an alleged pursuit in Armidale this morning. Police attempted to stop a Ford Falcon travelling on the New England Highway at about 2:00am. After a brief pursuit the driver stopped the car at the Corner of Gordon Street. The 25-year-old man is facing 16 charges, including driver manner dangerous, assaulting police as well as license and registration offences. The two police officers suffered minor injuries during the incident.​

MAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER ASSAULT AT COFFS HARBOUR

A man is in critical condition after an assault at Coffs Harbour yesterday. Shortly after midnight, two men in a light-brown sedan stopped and approached a group of people walking along Prince Street. The men assaulted a 41-year-old man and punched a 35-year-old man to fell to the ground unconscious. The two men ran back to their car and drove from the area. The 35-year-old suffered serious head injuries and remains in hospital in a critical condition. The 41-year-old suffered minor injuries and has been released from hospital.​
