SAND SCULPTURES SPARK UP SEISMIC TESTING CONVERSATIONS

Renowned artist Dennis Massoud drew a crowd at Bar Beach today, decorating the coast with his famous sandcastles. It was all about starting a conversation on seismic testing off the coast of Newcastle and the Central Coast. “When you have something as loud and as powerful as a seismic blast it disorientates the dolphin and the whale and it can result in their death quite often,” said Mr. Massoud. “When two thirds of our gas is shipped overseas, to subject our marine animals to this harm from underwater air gun blasting for the sake of fossil fuels is to us, unconscionable,” said Dr. Natasha Deen. A decision is expected to be announced soon on where the second round of exploration will be undertaken. HUNTER GREENS CANDIDATES UNVEILLED

The Greens have revealed two Hunter candidates, contesting the upcoming state election. Sinead Francis-Coan and Charlotte McCabe will contest Sonia Hornery and Tim Crakanthorp’s seats respectively. “Unfortunately I do feel Wallsend can be neglected, by the state government in particular, so I’ll be looking to restore as much attention to what the people of Wallsend are saying…” says Sinead Francis-Coan. “I think climate change is a really big issue because obviously it effects everyone and everything, we have a proposed off-shore oil & gas development at the moment, and I really want to work with the community to make sure that doesn’t happen.” says Charlotte McCabe. NEWCASTLE NYE FIREWORKS DISPLAY RESCHEDLUED

Newcastle’s New Year’s Eve fireworks, which were postponed due to strong wind, rain, and lightning – are set to go ahead on Australia Day. The 15-minute long display is scheduled to light up the harbour and foreshore, at around 8:30 next Saturday night. Council is hosting free parkour lessons, skateboarding activities and performances from cultural groups in Foreshore Park, earlier in the day. Maitland Council has also announced it will hold its rescheduled fireworks on June 22.

REVERED NEWCASTLE DOCTOR, NEVILLE ROTHFIELD REMEMBERED

Well known Newcastle doctor, Neville Rothfield is being remembered by generations of Novocastrians, following his passing at the age of 96. With a career spanning 71-years, Doctor Rothfield was one of the country’s longest practicing doctors – retiring just two-years ago. He was also one of the city’s first paediatricians, and also treated the last case of polio in Newcastle in the 1960s. Doctor Rothfield passed away over the weekend, and is survived by his four children, and 10-grandchildren. (VISION ONLY)

Food and wine lovers flocked to Merewether beach for a Sunday lunch, featuring some of the Hunter’s best flavours.
