WALLABIES HIT THE HUNTER

The Wallabies have turned to the Hunter to help reverse their fortunes. The team will hold training camps in both Newcastle and Cessnock beginning at the end of the month, in preparation for the Bledisloe Cup. Coach Michael Cheika says the side will be making an effort to connect with Hunter fans.

DRUGS AND WEAPONS ALLEGEDLY DISCOVERED IN MEREWETHER PROPERTY SEARCH

Police have allegedly uncovered illicit drugs, firearms, and cash during a property search in a beachside suburb of Newcastle. The search warrant was executed at a unit on Watkins Street in Merewether, around 9am yesterday. Police allegedly located two firearms, three prohibited weapons, cash, credit cards, and drugs including MDMA and cannabis during the search. A 25-year-old man will face court in August charged with having goods in custody, supplying a prohibited drug, and three counts of possessing an unauthorised weapon, among others.

GLASSING ATTACK BELIEVED TO BE UNPROVOKED

A man has been hospitalised after an alleged glassing attack in Newcastle overnight. Police say a 35-year-old male was with a group of friends at a Hunter Street venue around 7pm, when another man unexpectedly thrust a glass into his face, causing significant lacerations. Staff detained the attacker, a 37-year-old from New Lambton Heights, until police arrived. He was later charged with malicious wounding. Police believe the attack was unprovoked and the men were not known to each other. The victim was taken to John Hunter Hospital, treated and released.

ASSISTANCE SOUGHT TO FIND MISSING NEWCASTLE MAN

Police are asking for help to find a missing Newcastle man, who they believe may be heading towards Sydney. 62-year-old Robert Kemp was reported missing on Friday, after his family could not contact him. Mr Kemp, from Warabrook, was last seen at about 4.20 yesterday afternoon in Mayfield, and may have boarded a train for Sydney. Concerns are held for his welfare. Mr Kemp is described as being of caucasian appearance and solid build, about 175cm tall, with a fair complexion, brown eyes and dark grey hair.

CREDIT CARD FRAUD CHARGES FOLLOW VEHICLE BREAK-IN

A man has faced court after allegedly breaking into a car and committing numerous frauds with stolen bank cards across Newcastle. Police say that numerous bank cards were stolen when a car was broken into on Costata Crescent, Adamstown last Wednesday. The cards were then allegedly used at various locations to purchase goods. Police investigations led them to a home on Curley Road in Broadmeadow, where they executed a search warrant and arrested a 22-year-old man. He was charged with four counts of fraud and one count of stealing from motor vehicle.

MAN ATTEMPTS TO GRAB JOGGER IN NEWCASTLE

Police have released a computerised image of a man, they believed tried to grab a woman while she was running at Newcastle. The 25-year-old was heading east along Wharf Road on Tuesday morning, when she was approached by a man. He tried to talk to her, and when ignored, attempted to grab her arm. She ran away and sought help from people nearby. He’s described as being in his 30s or 40s, about 180-centimetres tall, with short brown hair and a medium build.
