DRIVER DIES AFTER CAR COLLIDES WITH B-DOUBLE AT MACKSVILLE

A man has lost his life in an overnight accident on the Pacific Highway just north of Macksville. Emergency crews were called to the Lumsden Lane intersection just after 4 o’clock this morning to find a northbound B-Double and a south-bound car had collided head-on. The driver of the car died at the scene. A safety barrier stopped the B-Double from careering into the Nambucca River The driver of the B-Double was taken to hospital suffering shock and for mandatory drug and alcohol testing. The section of highway, which was closed until mid afternoon, is due to be bypassed before Christmas. (***)

ARMED GROUP BELIEVED TO BE BEHIND MID NORTH ROBBERIES

Police have released CCTV images over a string of armed robberies on the state’s Mid North Coast dating back to November in 2015. Police believe the six armed robberies are linked. In each incident, a group of between three to five masked men have targeted licenced premises and clubs. As well as stealing cash from each venue, the armed group has threatened staff, and in one break-in they stole a woman’s handbag. The group has hit venues in Sawtell, Coffs Harbour, Wauchope, Mylestom, Macksville, and Toormina. The latest break in occured on April 20 this year. Detectives are appealing for anyone who has information relevant to the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers.

OFF-DUTY POLICE OFFICER ASSAULTED ON MID-NORTH COAST

Two men aged 46 and 26 will face a range of charges after an off-duty police officer was last night assaulted at a hotel in Macksville. The officer was hit after coming to the aid of a 30 year hotel staff member who was allegedly assaulted after asking the pair to leave the premises. The officer and the employee were both treated for facial injuries at the scene by paramedics. The accused men will reappear in court in February.

From February 25-28 the two teams will play at Coffs International Stadium, near Hughes’ hometown of Macksville.
