GREAT START FOR BAKER AT QS 6000 IN JAPAN

Merewether surfer Jackson Baker is off to a great start at the 6000-point Qualifying Series event in Japan. The 20-year-old managed a 6.93 on his opening wave, then waited more than 10 minutes to add to his total. “Jackson Baker in red, this is his second wave score, three belts, a back up score on a smaller wave.” Baker would catch just three waves, but that was enough in the small, inconsistent conditions, to win the heat. “I always seem to do good in Japan and I just have a rhythm and feel quite at home so I’m relaxed so to get a good heat win out of the way and a couple of good scores it feels good.”

BAKER DEFEATED IN SEMIS BY EVENTUAL CHAMPION OHHARA

Merewether’s Jackson Baker scored two nines at Avoca yesterday, to advance to the quarter finals of the Central Coast Pro. Today he was knocked out in the semis, as his rival, Hiroto Ohhara, went one better. Baker scored an early eight point five. But the Japanese rider produced three straight nines, finishing with a heat total of 19 point six five. Despite his best efforts, Jackson was eliminated, as Ohhara went on to win the contest.

VICTORY IN JAPAN STILL SINKING IN FOR JACKSON BAKER

Merewether surfer Jackson Baker admits his win in the QS 1000 event in Japan is still sinking in. “I just had people coming up to me for autographs and photos so that was cool. I ended up staying an hour afterwards before I got the chance to speak to mum and dad, I think they thought I was brushing them off.” The 19-year-old will return to the northern hemisphere next month for events in America, Spain and Portugal. For now, he’s watching the US Open closely. “I’ve got to see how this event goes and how far I drop after this event on the rankings … if I make two heats in Virginia I’ll improve my points by a lot.” Solid results will see Baker qualify for 10,000 point events, later in the year.

JACKSON BAKER HOLDS ON FOR WQS WIN IN JAPAN

Merewether’s Jackson Baker has scored a confidence boosting win, at the 1000 point World Qualifying Series event in Japan. Surfing in sloppy conditions, Baker scored an early 8.5 to establish a handy lead. He backed that up with a 7.25 to beat his Indonesian opponent by just over two points. The win sees the 19 year old jump into the QS top 90.

FAMILY GRIEVES AS PROPERTY REMAINS MISSING

A Newcastle family is appealing for the return of a lap top computer containing treasured images and a eulogy for their son. 20-year-old Jackson Baker’s body was found in Newcastle Harbour last week. The computer was stolen from the family home in the Newcastle suburb of the Hill. Jackson’s funeral is to be held tomorrow.
