BRONZE FOR HUNTER PLAYERS AT AHL FINALS

Hunter players Simon Orchard, Matt Dawson and Nick Hill have helped New South Wales win a bronze medal at the Australian Hockey League finals. The Waratahs faced Hockey India in the playoff game, the first international team ever to be invited to the annual tournament. Despite being the youngest side in the draw with eight debutants, New South Wales managed to slot five goals past their rivals, conceding just one. Fellow Hunter player Mariah Williams helped the Waratahs women also claim bronze.

CENTRAL WINS THE NEWCASTLE WOMEN’S HOCKEY DECIDER

Central has beaten Souths for just the second time this season to win the Newcastle Women’s Premier League hockey grand final, one-nil. The minor premiers looked dangerous early, Cassidy Gallagher went close. Before Kaitlin Duck almost put Souths on the board. The girls in green were creating plenty of chances, with both goalies kept busy. Kendall Steel and Georgia Sargent put their bodies on the line for the cause. Steel had a great opportunity to open the scoring for Central after the break. Eventually it was Morgan Coleman who handed the minor premiers the grand final trophy.

GOSFORD CLAIM HUNTER COAST HOCKEY TITLE

In the Hunter Coast Premier League, Norths made a great start. But Gosford hit back quickly, Robbie McGuire with his first chance. McGuire then tried to turn provider, almost teeing up Lain Carr. McGuire eventually found his mark, set up by Hugh Wickert. McGuire went looking for a second, before Norths launched another attack. In the end, Gosford held on to win by one.

NORTHS HOLD ONTO HOCKEY’S STANBURY-MOANE CUP

Norths have claimed the Stanbury-Moane Cup over Wests for the 7th straight year. Contested over all grades, Matt Dawson opened the scoring for Norths in the men’s premier league from a penalty corner. Wests responded through Chris Boyle to make it one-all. From there it was one-way traffic. Jordan Willott and James Piper combined to make it 2-1 to Norths. Dawson scored again from a penalty corner to make it 3-1. When Ben Howey took aim from long range, Norths were on their way to victory. The score blew out to 6-1, before the game ended 9-4.

ORCHARD ON TARGET AS KOOKABURRAS OVERCOME IRELAND

Australia’s mens and womens hockey teams have both qualified for the Rio Olympics, following the Kookaburras’ 4-1 win over Ireland in the quarter finals of the World League tournament. Australia waited until midway through the second quarter to open the scoring through Matt Gohdes. Jamie Dwyer added the next, before the Hunter’s Simon Orchard put Australia in front three-nil. “How does he get that around the feet of Hart, at full length tuck it on goal?” The Maitland boy then paid tribute to his childhood club, the Rams. The Kookaburras will now face Great Britain in the semi-finals.
