HEALTH INNOVATION ON THE MID NORTH COAST

As the National Health Innovation conference wrapped up in Coffs Harbour today, health professionals were reminded that improvement comes in all shapes and forms. Everything from 3-D printing and bionics through to developments in the palliative care workforce were featured. “I think it was a great regional showcase of innovation and research and they chose, I believe, Coffs because we’re starting to grow in that respect.” Digital technologies and mid north coast clinical trials were also on the agenda. ‘OUR KIDS’ KICKS OFF CHRISTMAS APPEAL

With the festive season fast approaching, local children’s charity ‘Our Kids’ has teamed up with Greater Bank to launch its inaugural ‘Greater Christmas’ campaign. Together, they’re asking residents to purchase an extra present for a sick child or teenager. The gifts will then be given to sick kids at Lismore Base Hospital. Donations can be dropped into Greater’s Lismore, Ballina and Casino branches. (AUDIO IN PARTS)

CANCER COUNCIL KICKS OFF PINK RIBBON MONTH

A Cancer Council high tea, held in Lismore this morning, has heralded the start of pink ribbon month. Throughout October, more than 400 locals are expected to host similar events – raising money to beat breast and gynecological cancer. “It’s really important to host events like this to raise that awareness in the community, and raise vital funds to prevent any cancers in the future.” It’s estimated around 350 Northern Rivers women will be diagnosed with the disease this year alone. Money raised will help fund local prevention and support services. (AUDIO IN PARTS)

HEALTH EXPERTS SEEK YOUTH FEEDBACK

Health department officials have met with  young people in Ballina, to hear whether current services are meeting their needs. Discussions focused on service availability in rural areas and how education could be improved. “A lot of school programs and stuff tell us what we should be thinking about things.” “You can definitely see certain areas that could definitely be improved.. But… I think we’re definitely heading in the right direction.” The officials will use today’s feedback, to modify and improve policies and services. “We really want to say OK how can we make health different for young people and make sure that they grow and have healthy adult lives.” (AUDIO IN PARTS)
