VAN DRIVER SOUGHT TO ASSIST INVESTIGATION INTO ALLEGED CARJACKING

The driver of a van that was the target of an alleged attempted carjacking near Grafton is urged to contact police as investigations into the incident continue. Around 4:30pm yesterday, police attempted to stop a black Toyota Rav 4 on the Pacific Highway in Clarenza. Police allege the vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated through James Creek and Chatsworth Island. The pursuit came to an end when a set of road spikes were deployed on the Pacific Highway at Mororo, but the driver and two passengers fled on foot. All three approached a white van, where one of them allegedly produced a replica firearm and attempted to carjack the vehicle before police intervened and arrested the trio – a 34-year-old man, a 23-year-old woman and a 15-year-old teenage boy. A RASH OF GRAFFITI AND VEHICLE DAMAGE HITS GRAFTON

A spike in theft and graffiti related crimes in the Grafton area has police asking the public to report any suspicious activity. Between Wednesday and Saturday last week, police received over 30 reports of damage to motor vehicles, with some vehicles also being broken into and stolen from. A number of public places have been damaged by graffiti in the same period, while a sports club has been broken into. A 13-year-old boy has been charged with a number of related offences. Police say more arrests are expected.

FLOOD RESCUES IN NORTHERN NSW AFTER PEOPLE IGNORE WARNINGS

At least three flood rescues have been carried out in northern New South Wales, as a low and trough continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the region. The rescues have been the result of people ignoring flood warnings. Floodwater has closed the Pacific Highway in both directions between Grafton and Ballina, and the highway is expected to remain closed until at least 11:00pm tonight. Significant downpours have been recorded across the region. Yamba recieved 157mm in the 24 hours to 9am today, bringing the monthly total to 418mm, more than double the average. Careys Peak (179mm) and Bellingen (142mm) also received significant downpours until 6am this morning, while Red Hill, Woolgoolga and Comboyne have all recorded more than 100mm each. SHARON EDWARDS REMEMBERED

A memorial has been held to celebrate the life of missing school teacher Sharon Edwards, who vanished from the north coast, nearly two years ago. Hundreds turned out to honour the popular grandmother at a Grafton Cathedral, hosted by her three sons. Police are treating the case as homicide. Mrs Edwards’ husband John was the last person to see her alive.
