MESSINA THROUGH TO NATIONAL TITLES

Port Macquarie boxer Jessica Messina has kept her Commonwealth Games hopes alive, winning a silver medal at the first pathway event. The 69-kilo welterweight, losing to Kaye Scott in a split decision at the New South Wales Titles on Saturday. It was still enough to land her a spot in the State Team, to compete in the Nationals in November.

EDWARDS CROWNED STATE WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION

Newcastle boxer Scott Edwards is the state’s new welterweight champion, following a dominant first round win over Dubbo’s Joel Galea at Wests City last night. The Sapphire put Galea on the ground, before unleashing again… the referee stepping in after the third stoppage. Edwards now has four KO wins from his four pro bouts – and is looking for his next opponent.

THREE FROM THREE FOR BOXER JAKE SNOWDEN

Lake Macquarie boxer Jake Snowden is finding it tough to attract quality opponents, just three fights into his professional career. Over the weekend, the cruiserweight scored his third straight knockout, stopping Sydney’s Walter Papua at the end of the first round. Trainer Peter Hallett says Snowden is likely to stay in his current division, with two more bouts before Christmas.

MESSINA PREPARING FOR WORLD TITLE BOUT

Port Macquarie’s Jessica Messina is preparing to make her international boxing debut, at the World Titles in Kazakhstan. The 23-year-old welterweight will step into the ring tomorrow night, for her first bout against a Croatian opponent. Laurieton Commonwealth Gold Medallist Shelley Watts is no longer competing in the event, instead focusing on preparations for the Rio Olympics. (VISION ONLY)
