FATAL CRASH AT THORA

A 31-year-old man has died, after two cars collided near Coffs Harbour this morning. Emergency services were called to Darkwood Road, west of Bellingen, at around 10:30. The driver of a Toyota Corolla died at the scene, while the driver of the second car was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact Crime Stoppers.

BELLINGEN GOES SOLAR

Bellingen Council has spent more than $130,000 installing solar panels on all of its council buildings. Mayor Dominic King says it’s another step in council’s mission to brand the shire as one of the most sustainable in Australia. “To invest in more solar and renewable energy because it makes really good economic sense and really really good environmental sense.” The system is expected to produce enough power to run the Raleigh Works Depot, and supply 30 percent of the administration buildings energy needs. MAN ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTS POLICE ON THE MID NORTH COAST

A man remains under police guard after allegedly assaulting a police officer following an incident on the Mid North Coast on the weekend. Police were patrolling the ‘Winter Music Festival’ in Bellingen just before midday on Saturday, when a Holden Commodore was seen speeding through a crossing, narrowly missing pedestrians. Police accuse the male driver of then crossing onto the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing a police vehicle, before crashing into concrete bollards in Short Street Lane. The driver, aged 34, then ran from the car, but a member of the public tackled and held him until police arrived. The man then suffered a medical episode, and was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus. The driver allegedly assaulted police on the way to the hospital, where he remains under police guard. A group of bicycle riders from the Bellinger Valley have brought unexpected freedom to a ‘one-punch’ victim and his family. Jake Brook was left with debilitating brain damage after a vicious assault at Dorrigo, but after years of being housebound he now has a set of wheels which allow him to get out and about.
