SKATING’S BEST COMPETE AT BAR BEACH

Newcastle’s seen plenty of surfing action in the past week but today, it was also in the skate park. The Australian Bowlriding Championships kicked off at Bar Beach, and it’s not hard to see why the crowds were so impressed. Some of the country’s – and world’s – best men, women and juniors are in town for the event. Finals are tomorrow.

SANTA DROPS BY TO HELP FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

Santa swapped the snow for the sand today, making a surprise visit to Bar Beach. And the one thing on everyone’s list there – a new clubhouse for the Cooks Hill Surf Lifesaving Club. A special sponsored nippers’ race helped with the fundraising effort, for the $4.5-million project. So far, the club has around $1.3-million for the project.

WHALE PLAYS IN WATER OFF BAR BEACH

A humpback whale has put on a show at Bar Beach in Newcastle today. The whale, heading north on its annual migration, was seen playing in water just off the viewing platform and giving a wave to onlookers. Marine mammal rescue organisation, ORRCA says the whale is pectoral fin slapping, a common behaviour shown by the majestic giants.

CHILD APPROACHED BY MAN AT BAR BEACH

Police are appealing for witnesses, after a young girl was approached at Bar Beach over the weekend. The four-year-old was walking with her mother along the promenade at around 11am on Saturday, when a man approached her and committed a lewd act. The man is believed to be aged in his late 40s or early 50s. He was wearing a white jumper, white shorts and a bright yellow cap. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

BODY FOUND AT BAR BEACH

UPDATE: Body of man found on Newcastle beach believed to be a 60-year-old man. Police still investigating cause of death. ******************** A body has been found on a rocky beach in Newcastle this morning. Police discovered the man’s body at Susan Gilmore Beach, the Northern end of Bar Beach. It is unclear how he died, more details as they come to hand.

MAN’S BODY FOUND AT BAR BEACH

The body of a man, believed to be in his 60s, has been found at Bar Beach in Newcastle this morning. Police made the discovery at around 6am and say his death is not being treated as suspicious. The man is yet to be formally identified. Anyone with information is asked to contact Newcastle police on (02) 4926 6599.

MEMORIAL WALK ON SCHEDULE FOR ANZAC CENTENARY

Newcastle’s highly anticipated ANZAC Memorial Walk, between Strzlecki Lookout and Bar Beach, continues to take shape, with the first half of its bridge in place. Crews worked through the night, using a crane to carefully lift the stainless steel sections onto the clifftop. “Last night went off without a hitch, which was absolutely fantastic news and a credit to the guys that are involved with the design, the engineering and the construction.” Work to complete the remaining section will take place early next month, with the project on track to be finished for the Gallipoli centenary in April.
