NATIONAL UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FALLS

In a surprising move, Australia’s unemployment rate has fallen to 5.8 per cent in February after the number of people looking for work dropped. Jobs growth was almost flat in the month, with full-time employment up 15,900, and part-time jobs down by 15,600. The participation rate, which refers to the number of people either employed or actively looking for work, fell to 64.9 per cent.

FINANCIAL COUNSELLING SERVICE RECEIVES CONFIRMED FUNDING FROM STATE GOVERNMENT FOR NEXT THREE YEARS

The Financial Counselling Hunter Valley Project’s future was unknown earlier this year, with fears the counselling service would close. Today, it was confirmed the service will receive another three years of State Government Funding. The service covers an area from Port Stephens to Quirindi in the North West. Each service across this area will be supported in the three years of funding. Member for Maitland, Jenny Aitchson welcomed the news, explaining it is a vital service to the community.

EVANS HEAD SHARK VICTIM REPORTEDLY FOUGHT OFF SHARK

The 52-year-old bitten by a shark this morning at Main Beach, Evans Head, reportedly fought off the shark. Deputy Inspector Cameron Lindsay said the man spotted the shark and warned others to paddle to shore. “He actually fought off the shark, we’re told, and has made it to shore and with the help of that other surfer”, he said. Two surfers and a passer-by initially helped the victim using towels as tourniquets until paramedics arrived. On Sunday, beaches around nearby Ballina were closed after two sharks were spotted off the coast.

SECOND SHARK SIGHTING ON NORTH COAST

The Oz Grom Junior Open at Lennox Head has been called off for today after a shark knocked a surfer off his board. The surfer wasn’t injured but the encounter follows an attack at nearby Ballina yesterday that critically injured a 32-year-old surfer.
