WEATHER UPDATE: CALMER WEEKEND
May 24, 2013
It has been a wild 24 hours on the Mid North Coast with 250mm falling on and near Coffs Harbour the biggest May rain in 14 years. 150 to 200mm in total further south to Port Macquarie. It is all thanks to a small but intense east coast low producing winds of 50 to 70km/h whipping up dangerous seas and swell.
Over Australia a large dominate high is ready to push the low away from the coast, quickly calming conditions for the weekend ahead. The rain band that has dumped the big rain totals will move offshore and scattered showers will ease while contracting north.
A big southerly swell and large tide due this weekends full moon will make for dangerous boating conditions.
Expect strong rips and currents and the big surf is for experienced, fit surfers only, making the most of the southern protected point breaks.
The cold frosty nights will return followed by clear, sunny days inland as isolated showers linger into next week along the northern NSW coast.

“I can see lots of positive things about it for tourism.”
Council still needs to speak with the local Fisherman’s Co-op and the Ballina Chamber of Commerce about the finer details.
“We have got to make sure it’s actually allowable from the wharf itself because the wharf is a public facility so there could be only limited times it could operate.”

May 23, 2013

“It’s pretty funny actually because I feel like there’s not gonna be much tragedy, there’s not much drama to it but it’s still cool to see a sail boat pushed onto shore by mother nature herself.”
The boat’s owners will attempt to refloat the wayward yacht on tonight’s high tide.
