TWEED SAYS NO TO PARKING METERS

May 17, 2013

Parking meters have proven no match for people power on the Tweed, with council scrapping plans to introduce them.

All seven councillors last night voted against trialling paid parking at selected boat ramps, beaches and parks.

“It would have seen the end of a lot of small business. And it would have just stopped tourists coming to the area.”

Councillors also knocked back an increase to their pay-packets.

They’ll earn about $17,500 in 2013/14, while the Mayor will take home just over $38,000.

WEATHER UPDATE: CHILLY WEEKEND

May 17, 2013

A slow moving, deep low is now spiralling over the Tasman producing a solid swell which will build overnight moving up the coast on Saturday. Combined with the cold, westerly winds will make for an epic weekend of waves up and down the coast for surf lovers.

The air mass is dry so low humidity levels are expected. The lack of moisture in the air allows the temperature to fall quickly once the sun goes down. On the bright side it also helps with day time heating.

Inland morning frosts will become a feature across the weekend.

There is a significant inland rain event brewing, we’ll check that first thing next week.

Not surprisingly, he’s the oldest resident at RSL Care Banora Point, but still lives independently.

His secret? Having lots of birthdays.

“Happy birthday to you. Hippip, hooray!”

“I probably have a scotch a day.” “A scotch a day keeps the doctor away?” “Oh no I like him – he’s nice – laugh. He saved my life.”

John remembers the day World War One started, and says younger generations need to appreciate their freedom.

FIRECRACKER SPARKS HOTEL BOMB SCARE

May 16, 2013

A motel cleaner sparked a bomb scare this morning, when she spotted a suspicious looking cylinder in a room.

Celiac Court in Tweed Heads South was searched by fire-fighters and police, who were relieved to find the object was fairly innocent.

“We found underneath the bed what appeared to be an old roman candle – just a simple fire cracker with a fuse at the end, it was unlit and we took possession of it and rendered it safe.”

They say it was an understandable mistake, and the cleaner was right to raise the alarm.
