Police divers have recovered the body of an elderly woman, whose car was swept into flood waters in Maitland.
At around 9am yesterday, emergency services were called to Cessnock Road near Gilleston Heights.
Four people entered the water to assist, but had to be rescued themselves.
The search – involving police, Fire and Rescue New South Wales and the SES, continued throughout the day – until the car was located at around 6pm.
Police had been told two women were in the car, but divers found no evidence that a second person was inside.
