The big guns have fallen early on a frustrating day at the Margaret Pro.
Fanning, who last week won another Bells title, was knocked out by local Jay Davies.
Earlier in the day Joel Parkinson was defeated by Hawaiian Sebastien Zeits.
“We both expected to have a lot more waves than that. I expected after this morning’s surf and watching it before I went out there was a lot of opportunities and then there wasn’t,” Parkinson said.
“We sat there from probably the 18-minute mark to the 10-minute mark without a wave. It was just kind of quiet.”
